What We Do
A service-learning model that turns empathy into action.
A service-learning model that turns empathy into action.
Helping Hands for Homelessness uses a four-part service-learning model that helps students move from awareness to action. Students begin by learning about homelessness, stigma, root causes, and respectful service practices. They then serve directly with community partners, take on leadership roles through organizing and participating in a pop-up resource fair, and then reflect on their experiences so they can continue growing as compassionate civic leaders. This model allows students to make a meaningful impact while providing people experiencing homelessness with care, resources, and human connection.
Students begin their Helping Hands experience with a targeted educational workshop designed to build understanding, empathy, and awareness around homelessness. Through presentations, discussion, and educational content, participants explore the root causes of homelessness, common misconceptions, barriers to accessing resources, and the importance of dignity-centered service. The goal is not only to educate students about a complex social issue, but also to prepare them to engage respectfully and effectively with the communities they will serve.
After completing the workshop, students are connected with meaningful volunteer opportunities through local nonprofit organizations and community partners. Helping Hands coordinates outreach, sign-ups, transportation, and event logistics to make service accessible and engaging. Whether assisting at shelters, participating in outreach efforts, supporting resource distribution, or volunteering at community events, students gain firsthand experience while making a tangible impact in their local communities and interacting with those they are serving.
Students apply their academic, professional, and leadership skills during Helping Hands resource fairs, where they work alongside community partners to provide direct support to guests experiencing homelessness. Depending on their background and training, students may assist with health screenings, resource navigation, hygiene distribution, clothing support, meal service, personal care services, event operations, and guest engagement. These experiences allow students to use the knowledge and skills they have developed in the classroom to make a tangible impact while helping create a welcoming, dignity-centered environment for the community.
Following the resource fair, students are invited to attend a banquet where they reflect on their service experience, hear stories from guests and community partners, and celebrate the impact they made together. Through dinner, activities, recognition, and meaningful discussion, students gain a deeper understanding of homelessness while building lasting connections with fellow volunteers. The banquet serves as both a reflection opportunity and a reminder that community service is not a one-time event, but an ongoing commitment to compassion, leadership, and civic engagement.
Helping Hands resource fairs bring student volunteers, campus leaders, and community partners together to provide dignity-centered support for people experiencing homelessness. Each event is designed to meet immediate needs while creating a respectful, welcoming space where guests feel seen, valued, and supported.
Before each resource fair, student leaders coordinate partner outreach, volunteer recruitment, student training, supply collection, event logistics, and impact tracking. On event day, volunteers help welcome guests, distribute resources, support partner stations, and create an environment rooted in warmth, respect, and human connection. Trained student volunteers lead and assist the operation of every station.
Health & Hygiene Support
Guests may receive hygiene kits, sanitation supplies, hydration support, and basic health screenings provided through qualified community partners, assisted by nursing students.
Food & Clothing
Resource fairs may include meals, snacks, water, clothing, shoes, blankets, and other basic necessities based on community need and available donations.
Haircuts & Personal Care
When qualified partners are available, guests receive haircuts and other personal care services that support confidence, comfort, and dignity.
Community Resources
Helping Hands connects guests with nonprofit partners, social service providers, local support organizations, and community-based resources that can offer continued assistance beyond the event.
Human Connection & Strengthening of Community
At the center of every resource fair is the belief that service should be personal, respectful, and dignity-centered. Volunteers are trained to treat every guest with patience, kindness, and compassion. Many student volunteers end up forming genuine personal connections with guests, and sometimes keep in contact after events.
